One of the reasons why I chose this category for Oracle Girl Giving was because of Japan. Take the practice of daisugi for example, an ancient Japanese method of producing high quality wood without ever cutting down a tree. Traditionally, in the forests of Kitayama, cedar trees would be specially planted in pre-existing trees, then heavily pruned like bonsai. This accelerated harvest cycles where there was a shortage of flat slopes for ordinary tree-growing and produced straighter, denser knot-free high quality wood for housebuilding and traditional crafts.
