Guilt, blame & shame

We blame ourselves all of the time. If it isn’t what we have done, it’s just as much what we haven’t. In a culture of striving and perfection, we are perpetually encouraged to do better, be better and be our best.

But is this the way? We can gradually feel completely undermined and totally lose our confidence if we don’t continually make the grade. We lose faith in ourselves feeling we will never be good enough and start to see our lives only in terms of the aims, achievements and ambitions we have never met - also judging everyone else by the same standards we fail we keep to ourselves. In an age where life’s failures so quickly becomes public property, the shame - and the blame - quickly take over.

Not exactly a recipe for happiness.

Standards and endeavour have their place but if that deep contentment is what we are looking for, it is better to understand guilt, blame and shame in a different way.

These things are very real and have very real effects in our world. They leave a mark. But this mark is not indelible. All experiences move us and are registered in our body through our senses but actually ... they are none of our business.

This seems a strange thing to say. But that is only if you think blame and all its species are yours and you. They are not. You experience them, but actually they are hooked up with a whole tribe of dependents which you don’t need to identify with: namely, persona and identity.

Blame, shame and guilt are all part of a framework of being - what we might call an insubstantial or imitator self - which is not us. Just as blame is actually a thought, so too is our identity - just a thought of a very solid and structured nature. Correctly understood, if we want to release ourselves and others of the often very painful effects of blame, shame and guilt, we need to concentrate on being ourselves - the free being which, blame and shame and guilt are continually moving through and leaving ... all of their own accord.

This purification track will reorient you and mitigate those painful effects. It is part of the Silent Immersion Retreat of course and so will have far reaching effects.

Play while you meditate, do things, lie in the bath … until all the words go in without losing awareness or falling asleep. Listen for yourself or for someone else, naming them silently within at the beginning. You can also play the recording with the sound turned down in the background, while you are busy or sleeping.
